Backfill Engineer - Dugald River

MMG's inaugural mine development project, Dugald River, is a world-class zinc-lead-silver deposit located in north-west Queensland.  With a development capital expenditure in excess of AUD1,400M, the scope of the project includes a two million tonne per year underground mine with twin decline access and conventional long hole and bench stoping; fine grinding and flotation circuits and a combination of existing and developed .

We currently have a role available for an Engineer – Backfill, who will make sure that site backfill operations and production targets are met or exceeded, and that optimal extraction of the ore body is ensured.

Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, you will ensure backfill activities are supported with appropriate plans and schedules which are then followed and monitored to provide for safe and efficient mine production.

On a day to day basis you will be involved in:

  • Develop a working knowledge of the paste plant and process, including maintaining relationships with operators, supervisors, engineers and Superintendents
  • Prepare budget, work requests, activation emails and work instructions
  • Determine pressure profiles, fill mass strength requirements
  • Design future pipe extension requirements and prepare PR(Purchase Orders/Reqs) for pipes and fitting ahead of requirements so that equipment is on site when needed
  • Use Deswik & PumpSim
  • Manage QC and QA of paste samples and the database, major pipe extensions – i.e. risk assessments for new pipe installs particularly for vertical pipe
  • Test fibrecrete used in bulkhead construction
  • Assess fill type requirements, pipe routes, fill notes, changes to binder formulae, stability and safe access
  • Monitor the stocks of pipes, fittings, instruments, binder and chemicals

To be considered, it’s essential you hold a bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Civil, Geotechnical, Mechanical or Mining) with technical knowledge and skills in backfill planning, underground sublevel open stoping, a current Class C Drivers Licence and a sound knowledge of rock mechanics, numerical modelling, seismicity, ground support systems and methods.

MMG is supportive of our local communities and region. The role is available on a drive in drive out basis (DIDO) from the Cloncurry or Mount Isa Districts.  Relocation support will be available for successful candidates who reside outside of the local region and who wish to relocate to the Cloncurry or Mount Isa districts. This role will operate on an 8/6 roster or a similar alternative , FIFO from Townsville is on offer for residents living in Townsville and Brisbane.
