Senior Geotechnical Engineer - Dugald River

We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our team at Dugald River Mine.  Reporting to the Technical Services Superintendent in the Mining Technical Services Department, you will be responsible to ensure correct and professional application of geotechnical principles to the planning and operation of the Dugald River Mine, so that compliance with company standards for Ground Control are achieved and maintained. 

Role Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership of the geotechnical engineering team              
  • Develop standards relating to ground control, support, mining methods and extraction sequencing
  • Ensure that a Ground Control Management Plan in line with the statutory guidelines is developed, implemented and maintained
  • Develop and maintain systems to monitor and evaluate geotechnical conditions and ensure the efficiency and continuous improvement of these systems
  • Monitor rock deformations, stress and seismicity
  • Monitor support and reinforcement systems
  • Undertake geotechnical analysis utilising Rock Mass Classification systems, empirical methods and numerical modelling
  • Conduct formal reviews of stope performance focusing on rock mechanics issues
  • Analyse backfill QA/QC results to determine fill quality in stopes and identify issues
  • Provide input into mine planning to ensure excavation designs, sequence, pillars, ground support etc. are appropriate to local conditions.  Ensure that “lessons learnt” from previous stoping are incorporated into design standards
  • Provide geotechnical engineering input into mine design and long term planning
  • Ensure that all documentation relating to ground support and geotechnical issues are reviewed on a predetermined basis
  • Ensure that all required geotechnical reports are developed within agreed timeframes
  • Research and Development – Direct internal research and development projects in areas of ground support, backfill, instrumentation and mining methods
  • Appoint and manage all external consultants / contractors

To be successful in this role, you will have the below;

  • Minimum of 6 years in underground mining, particularly in the area of rock mechanics
  • Experience in geotechnical data collection and processing
  • Demonstrated ability in the identification, analysis and resolution of rock mechanics issues

Further Qualifications and Licences required for this role;

  • Recognised and relevant Tertiary Degree, i.e. Bachelor of Science / Engineering (Mining, Geology or Geological / Geotechnical Engineering)
  • Postgraduate degree or industry accepted further qualification in geotechnical or related field
  • Current C Class Licence
  • At least one of professional organisation memberships (i.e. AusIMM, IEAust, ISRM, AGS, EAGCG)
  • Regular publications / presentations at professional forums

This role is based on an 9/6 4/3 4/2 roster, drive in drive out from Cloncurry or Mount Isa or fly in fly out from Townsville (we may consider Brisbane as a commute base to site)  Relocation support will be available for successful candidates who reside outside of the local region who wish to relocate to the Cloncurry or Mount Isa districts)

Remuneration for this role includes a competitive salary package and an annual bonus. On-site accommodation and travel to Dugald River is provided in fully air-conditioned en suite rooms and includes meal service and room cleaning. The new village features, communal media facilities including 4G coverage, onsite Medical Centre, sporting, brand new swimming pool and gym facilities.
