Geotechnical Engineer

MMG Dugald River:

The mine; Dugald River is fully owned by MMG Limited and is one of the world’s top 10 Zinc operation and is mined underground. Dugald River  has an estimated mine life of 20+ years and is expected to produce around 180,000 – 190,000 tonnes of zinc in zinc concentrate annually. The operation employs around 500 employees and contractors on a mix of fly-in, fly-out and local residential basis. 

Geotechnical Engineer

Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, this role is responsible to ensure correct and professional application of geotechnical principles to the planning and operation at Dugald River, so that compliance with Company Standards for Ground Control are achieved and maintained. This role offers an opportunity to provide strategic input to the sustainable operation of Dugald River Mine including providing recommendation for managing risks and hazards associated with LOM design.  The role seeks an intermediate Geotechnical Engineer that is looking to further develop their technical and leadership skills.

The role is available on a FIFO (Brisbane or Townsville) or drive-in drive-out basis (DIDO) from the Cloncurry or Mount Isa Districts. The role will operate on an 8/6 roster. Relocation support will be available for successful candidates who reside outside of one of our point of hires.

Qualifications & Competencies

  • Tertiary qualification in Geotechnical and/or Mining Engineering or Geology with Post-Graduate qualifications in mining rock mechanics.
  • An unwavering commitment to workplace safety.
  • Ability to contribute technical knowledge on the subjects of rock mechanics, numerical modelling, seismicity and ground support systems.
  • Demonstrable underground mining experience, hard rock mining environment is preferred.
  • Strong communication, negotiation and influencing capabilities.
  • Ability to engage stakeholders effectively in technical and operational roles.
  • Strong experience in related geotechnical software packages including Deswik, Rocscience and IMS. MAP3D and/or RS3 skills will be favourable.
  • Applicants with RPEQ certification and/or CPEng experience will be highly regarded.

Key responsibilities will include;

  • Promote a strong compliance to mining regulations, legislation, and company safety objectives relevant to ground control.
  • Identify and manage geotechnical risks and develop systems to monitor and control these risks where required.
  • Provide input into mine planning to ensure excavation designs, pillars, ground support and mining sequences are appropriate.
  • Undertaking geotechnical analysis during the stope note process utilising Rock Mass Classification systems, stereonets, failure mode analysis and numerical modelling.
  • Conducting reviews of stope performance focussing on rock mechanics issues.
  • Undertaking site investigations on rockfalls, rock noise and other geotechnical hazards, and maintaining the relevant databases.
  • Assessing seismic responses to mining and managing seismic hazard.
  • Review and update the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP).
  • Contribute and strive to achieve compliance to the weekly and monthly schedules with the Mine Technical Services and Operations Teams.
  • Collect and interpret geotechnical data including core logging, rock face mapping and instrumentation.
  • Daily geotechnical operational and design tasks which includes development and production underground inspections, monitoring ground support installation, timely reviewal and approval of development and production plans, and QAQC.
  • Design and provide operational input into backfill plans for mined voids.
