Project Geologist

MMG Dugald River:

The mine; Dugald River is fully owned by MMG Limited and is one of the world’s top 10 Zinc operation and is mined underground. Dugald River is expected to produce around 180,000 – 190,000 tonnes of zinc in zinc concentrate annually. The operation employs around 500 employees and contractors on a mix of fly-in, fly-out and local residential basis. 

The deposit; Dugald River is a unique Zinc deposit being 70Mt in resource which has the potential to extend beyond a 20-year mine life. Orebody Knowledge completed since 2017 has substantially increased the geological understanding that has contributed to grade control, reconciliation and growth at Dugald River. Project Geologist

Reporting to the Senior Project Geologist, this role will develop the geological understanding of the Dugald River ore system and apply this knowledge to improve the Dugald River mine. You will identify and execute business improvement opportunities, mentor and train Graduate and Mine Geologists.

This role will include geological data collection, QAQC and interpretation, database management, liaison with external contractor and stakeholders, assisting with resource modelling, and executing drill programs.

This role will be based on an 8/6, drive in drive out (DIDO) from Cloncurry or Mt Isa or fly in fly out (FIFO) from Townsville or Brisbane. Relocation support will be available for successful candidates who reside outside of these locations.

Qualifications, skills & competencies

  • This role would ideally be suited to an exploration or mine geologist looking to take the next step in their career
  • Tertiary qualifications in Geology with demonstrated underground geology experience and sound computer skills.
  • Membership with AusIMM, AIG, GSA or similar professional organisation
  • Familiarity with QAQC best practice guidelines
  • Ability to undertake mapping and structural interpretation
  • Familiarity with State Mining Acts and Regulations
  • Strong technical, organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills with a proactive attitude towards safety.
  • Previous exposure to underground mapping, photogrammetry and geological interpretation
  • Working knowledge of geological databases and 3D mining software
  • Understanding of drilling programme performance and optimisation with experience in surface and/or underground drilling programs
  • Ability to manage core processing and provide direction to field technicians.
  • Australian manual Class (car) driver’s licence and Forklift licence

Responsibilities include

  • Identify, plan and implement business improvement opportunities relating to mine geology
  • Participate in and develop orebody knowledge projects
  • Assist in maintaining underground mapping and core logging standards and outcomes
  • Responsible for performance of QAQC protocols, regular reporting of QAQC performance and liaison with laboratory
  • Assist in compiling data used in annual mineral resource reporting and JORC compliant resource models
  • Review and ensure consistent geological data interpretation
  • Manage the design, scheduling, execution and supervision of all drilling activities (underground and surface)
  • Mentor and train Graduate and Mine geologists and supervise and provide direction to the junior members in the Geology team when required
  • Assist in regular geological reports and in material movement reconciliations
  • Collaborate with other team members to support and meet the geology departments assigned targets

Remuneration for this role includes a competitive salary package, annual bonus and generous local allowances.
