Project Metallurgist

MMG Dugald River:

Dugald River is one of the world’s top 10 zinc operations, located near Cloncurry in Queensland. Dugald River was successfully commissioned ahead of schedule and under budget, with first production of zinc concentrate leaving Dugald River in November 2017. Dugald River is estimated to have a mine life of 20+ years to process an average of 1.7 million tonnes of ore per annum. The operation predominantly produces zinc concentrate, with by-products including lead and silver.

Project Metallurgist

The Dugald River concentrator is entering an exciting phase of the operation that requires rigorous and defined metallurgical assessment of improvement opportunities and a systemic approach to execution to ensure long-term sustainable implementation.

This is an opportunity to improve overall performance whilst leveraging off the vision to become a data-driven operation, to help achieve this, we have a current opportunity for an experienced Project Metallurgist.

Reporting to the Senior Metallurgist – Projects, you will be a key member of the site technical team to take the operation forward as we strive to be recognised as a best-practice operation.

This role is based on an 8/6 roster, drive in drive out from Cloncurry or Mount Isa or fly in fly out from Townsville or Brisbane. Remuneration for this role includes a competitive salary package, annual bonus and generous local allowances if you live within the local community.

Qualifications Skills and Competencies;

  • Tertiary qualification in Metallurgy or Chemical Engineering.
  • Manual driver's license.
  • Demonstrable metallurgy experience preferably in Lead / Zinc base metals flotation
  • Designing, planning and executing metallurgical testwork programs, especially around ore characterisation and geometallurgy.
  • Previous exposure to mass balancing, modelling and simulation (JKSimMet/JKSimFloat desirable).

Some of your key responsibilities will include;

  • An unwavering commitment to workplace safety and a demonstrated expertise in establishing cultures and systems that embed safety awareness
  • Support the delivery of key metallurgical technical improvement projects to address systemic variances from expected performance.
  • Undertake metallurgical testwork on future ores, using the results to update and maintain the metallurgical performance models (with all assumptions documented) as well as provide updated guidance to technical and operations personnel on operating strategies.
  • Identify and evaluate new processes, procedures and technologies which have the potential to improve value recovery.
  • Implement programs aimed and improving the longer-term metallurgical understanding and performance of the concentrator.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring of junior technical and operations personnel to further their understanding of metallurgical processes.
  • Provide coverage for the Plant Metallurgist when required
