Senior Geotechnical Engineer - Dugald River

MMG Dugald River:

Dugald River is one of the world’s top 10 zinc operations, located near Cloncurry in Queensland. Dugald River was successfully commissioned ahead of schedule and under budget, with first production of zinc concentrate in October 2017.

Dugald River is estimated to have a mine life of 20+ years processing an average of 1.7 million tonnes of ore per annum. The operation predominantly produces zinc concentrate, with by-products including lead and silver.

Senior Geotechnical Engineer

We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our team at Dugald River Mine.  Reporting to the Technical Services Superintendent in the Mining Technical Services Department, you will be responsible to ensure correct and professional application of geotechnical principles to the planning and operation of the Dugald River Mine, so that compliance with company standards for Ground Control are achieved and maintained. 

This role is based on an 8/6, 4/3 roster, drive in drive out from Cloncurry or Mount Isa or fly in fly out from Townsville/Brisbane.  Relocation support will be available for successful candidates who reside outside of the local region who wish to relocate to the Cloncurry or Mount Isa districts

Competencies, qualifications and skills:

  • An unwavering commitment to workplace safety and a demonstrated expertise in establishing cultures and systems that embed safety awareness.
  • A drive for continuous improvement
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills with a demonstrated ability to contribute and work effectively in a team
  • Sound knowledge of rock mechanics, numerical modelling, ground support systems and methods
  • Proficiency in mine design and geotechnical software packages
  • Substantial experience with various stoping and backfill methods, geotechnical data collection and processing, and the technical design of stopes, pillars and ground support
  • Experience leading and coaching high performing teams

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Coaching and developing of the Geotechnical Engineering Team in functions of rock mechanics and ground control
  • Developing and maintaining standards relating to ground control, ground support, mining methods and extraction sequencing and ensuring that the site’s Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP) is in line with the statutory and company guidelines.
  • Providing feedback to the long-term planning department regarding the practicality of the plan with regards to ground control and stability
  • Ensuring that operational management is adequately briefed on ground control issues in a timely manner
  • Identifying areas for business improvement and engaging stakeholders for optimisation
  • Leading and participating in operational incident investigations
  • Undertaking geotechnical analysis utilising Rock Mass Classification systems, empirical methods and numerical modelling, conducting formal reviews of excavation designs and performance focusing on Geotechnical issues
  • Providing input into mine planning to ensure excavation designs, sequence, pillars and ground support are appropriate to local conditions
  • Developing and maintaining a QA/QC system for ground support and backfill
