MMG Rosebery:
Rosebery is an underground polymetallic base metal mine located in the township of Rosebery in Tasmania, Australia and is 100% owned by MMG Limited.
With continuous production since 1936 Rosebery mine has current potential to extend life beyond 2028. This underground mine has continually attracted and produced world class professionals. With a strong community focus and core values including safety and integrity, we are proud of our role in community development and our economic contribution to the local Tasmanian industry.
The operation continues to deliver excellent operational performance and employs over 500 employees and contractors who reside in the local region.
Environment & Sustainability Superintendent
Reporting to the Manager Environment & Community, this role is responsible to develop & maintain MMG’s license to operate through compliance with internal & external environmental & social performance requirements, provide environmental, social and sustainability leadership, implement directives, improve performance, and ensure site environmental and social policies and procedures are aligned with Commonwealth and State regulations and legislation.
This position is responsible to ensure the operation complies with all conditions of the Environmental Protection Notices and MMG’s internal standards through the development, implementation and adherence to a range of monitoring programs, management plans and procedures. Establish processes to monitor, analyse and understand the impact of the operations on the surrounding environment and communities, direct & develop the site environmental & sustainability performance team and ensure ongoing community support for the operation.
The role is offered on an 5/2,4/3 roster based out of either Rosebery or Burnie. This is a residential role with options to DIDO from other locations in Tasmania.
Competencies, qualifications and skills:
Bachelor’s degree qualified Environmental Engineer, Environmental Scientist or Geoscientist
Post graduate qualifications in Community Relations or Social Impact Assessment a differential
Demonstrable mining industry experience in the fields of environmental compliance, monitoring, permitting/approvals, stakeholder engagement, and/or environmental and social impact assessment
C Class Driver’s License
Demonstrated experience in operational environmental management, stakeholder consultation and social performance. Successful implementation of environmental management systems
Ability to understand and appropriately adapt regulatory and industry guidelines, and leading practices to meet MMG business objectives
Strong communication skills written and oral with a focus on report writing, management plan development and implementation
An ability to promote teamwork and collaboration, challenge others, and facilitate input in the form of ideas, views and expertise
Ability to apply objective, data-driven problem solving and sound judgement to decisions about environmental and social planning and implementation
Understanding of the mining value chain and the key components (geological, mining, processing, tailings) of LoA planning, and their propensity for developing environmental and social impacts
Excellent working knowledge of environmental and social management frameworks, and of the technical (Geochemical, Geotechnical, Hydrological, Environmental) and socio-economic interdependencies that can affect operations
Deep understanding of the key suite of technical models used in environmental management and where they are most effectively applied (surface water, groundwater, dust, noise etc)
Working knowledge of study management, including key processes such as design criteria, options assessments, risk assessments and project controls
Key responsibilities will include:
Delivering environmental and sustainability performance inputs for the Life of Asset planning process including environmental protection notice constraints, and stakeholder commitments
Monitor the spectrum of site operational programs and Head Office programs to ensure alignment with environmental and sustainability performance requirements, and timelines, and to identify emerging risks or opportunities
Provide expert advice, training/coaching, guidance and mentoring both to direct reports and other employees on environmental and sustainability initiatives and necessary changes
Develop strong partnerships with Site and Head Office stakeholders to ensure delivery against short, medium and long term strategic objectives.
Monitor environmental and sustainability performance related industry best practice, innovation, stakeholder expectations and regulatory trends; and communicate to internal stakeholders. Incorporate into site practices where appropriate.
Investigate opportunities to minimise departmental costs within the confines of regulatory compliance and meeting stakeholder obligations
Proactively engage with external stakeholders to build sustainable long-term relationships and maintain social licence to operate. This includes engagement with communities, businesses, interest groups, & other government & non-government organisations & their staff. Maintain a community stakeholder list
