About the role

Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, you will have the opportunity to work in one of the deepest mines in Australia. Working in a small Geotechnical team you will gain highly diverse experience with sub-level stoping at depth as well as exposure to legacy mining operations. This is an excellent position for someone who is looking to expand their Geotechnical knowledge and who is self-motivated and can work independently.

The role is offered on an 8/6 roster. This role is offered on a flexible arrangement for the right candidate either residential in Rosebery, Drive in/Drive out (DIDO) from Tasmanian locations or Fly in/Fly Out (FIFO) from within Australia. 

With demonstrated experience as a Geotechnical Engineer within underground mining, you will have well-developed skills and personal attributes including the following:

  • An unwavering commitment to workplace safety and a demonstrated expertise in establishing cultures and systems that embed safety awareness.
  • Degree qualifications in Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Exposure to more than one site will be advantageous.
  • Experience with underground mining.
  • Current drivers’ license.
  • Promotion of an environment of continuous improvement and collaboration.
  • Experience with IMS, MxRAP and Rocscience software.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide geotechnical engineering service to Mine Planning and Mine Operations to achieve safety and production objectives for the company.
  • Conduct daily production tasks including seismic monitoring, review of development, drill and blast designs, underground inspections, producing ground control designs and advising on ground control matters.
  • Heavily involved in geotechnical assessments of stope designs, as well as undertaking geotechnical analysis and reconciliation to optimise stope and mining panel designs for near to mid-term planning.
  • Assist to develop, design, install and evaluate monitoring systems for rockmass deformation and performance of ground control systems.
  • Ensure ground control audits and QAQC programs are regularly undertaken and developing corrective measures as required. Actively lead development and roll out of formal QAQC program.
  • Assist in the development, design and management of a monitoring and rehabilitation program of long-term critical infrastructure.
  • Facilitate and coordinate with ACG researchers for site-based projects.
  • Periodic collection and analysis of geotechnical data including core logging and geotechnical mapping to develop geotechnical parameters for future mining horizons.
  • Regularly review geotechnical data to identify improvements, emerging geotechnical risks and potential gaps, and oversee these changes.

The Rosebery Mine has been at the heart of the Rosebery community since 1936 and is one of Tasmania’s largest and oldest continuously operating, underground mines producing zinc, copper and lead concentrates, as well as gold doré.
