Engineer – Surface Operations Process Control

MMG Rosebery Mine is an underground polymetallic base metal mine located in the township of Rosebery in the west coast of Tasmania, Australia.  It has been at the heart of the Rosebery community since 1936 and is one of Tasmania’s largest and oldest continuously operating, underground mines producing zinc, copper and lead concentrates, as well as gold doré.

It supports approximately 500 workers and their families, has a strong community focus and engages a wide range of local businesses from across Tasmania in its supply chain boosting the economy of the West Coast of Tasmania and beyond.

MMG has an office in Burnie, giving employees the flexibility to work from there when they are not required onsite.

Engineer – Surface Operations Process Control

Reporting to the Superintendent, Metallurgy, The Process Control Engineer is the key site person will actively support operations and ensure process control functionality is of the highest quality, aiding the improvement in value recovery from the concentrator. They will also be responsible for guiding the ongoing maintenance and optimisation of the SCADA/PLC system.

This role is based on a 5/2:4/3 roster, residential to Rosebery or DIDO from any location in Tasmania or based at our Burnie office.

Responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Ongoing management of the PCS system performance, liaising with the maintenance and IT departments to ensure availability of the system hardware.
  • Work with the Metallurgy team to understand the process value drivers and recovery impacts of unit operations and the process as a whole. Identify and implement opportunities to improve process control to assist with circuit stability and performance.
  • Remain up to date with Processing Technology and Control technical solutions to identify where Rosebery may benefit from them.
  • Monitor process performance and undertake optimisation activities including but not limited to graphics changes, tuning of process control loops and alarm management.
  • Ensure all changes to the PCS follow Change Management processes; guaranteeing the system architecture is maintained and the integrity of interfaces from the SCADA/historian to Mine Operating Systems are preserved.
  • Take ownership of any control philosophy documentation and provide input/guidance on documentation management.
  • Work with other Process Control Consultants (who provide 24/7 support) as required.
  • Liaise with external Process Control Support Contractors working in both project and support functions.
  • Provide ongoing support and guidance to key users of the PCS, facilitating training programs and mentoring of processing technical staff.

Qualifications Skills and Competencies;

  • Thorough understanding of Process Control System architecture, specifically Honeywell (Experion) DCS and/ or SCADA/ Rockwell PLC based systems including coding.
  • Understanding and interpretation of electrical drawings and P&ID's.
  • Sound knowledge of process control optimisation techniques, including but not limited to loop tuning and alarm management.
  • In depth understanding of process control system architecture and change management process required to preserve it.
  • Desirable to have basic understanding of the core processes used in the base metals concentrators including crushing, grinding, flotation, thickening and dewatering.
  • Previous exposure to DCS and PLC systems, Pi Historian, as well as OPC, Controlnet, Devicenet, Ethernet, Modbus,Wireless, Fibre Optic and RTU communications would be highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse and manage procesing plant control system performance and undertake control loop tuning and alarm management to improve circuit operation and stability.
  • Demonstrated experience in identification and implementation of projects to maximise value recovery through improvements in the process control.
