MMG Rosebery
Rosebery is an underground polymetallic base metal mine located in the township of Rosebery in Tasmania, Australia. The mine is a deep, sub-level open stoping operation with complex mining conditions.
The Rosebery Mine has been at the heart of the Rosebery community since 1936 and is one of Tasmania’s largest and oldest continuously operating, underground mines producing zinc, copper and lead concentrates, as well as gold doré.
It supports approximately 500 employees and their families, has a strong community focus and engages a wide range of local businesses from across Tasmania in its supply chain boosting the economy of the West Coast of Tasmania and beyond.
The mine has a strong future, with extensive exploration activities which have continued to grow the resource and require mine planning beyond 10 years of continued operation.
MMG Rosebery has an office in Burnie (Tasmania), giving employees the flexibility to work from there when they are not required onsite.
Superintendent Environment and Sustainability
Reporting to the Manager – Environment and Community the purpose of this role is to develop and maintain our licence to operate through compliance with internal and external environmental and social performance requirements, provide environmental, social and sustainability leadership, implement directives, improve performance, and ensure site environmental and social policies and procedures are aligned with Commonwealth and State regulations and legislation.
This role is offered on a 5:2 / 4:3 roster DIDO to Rosebery or based in our Burnie office on the scenic West Coast of Tasmania. FIFO may be a consideration for candidates based on the East Coast of Australia on an 8:6 roster.
Key Accountabilities (however not limited to):
- Ensure the operation complies with all conditions of the Environmental Protection Notices and MMG internal standards through the development, implementation and adherence to a range of monitoring programs, management plans and procedures.
- Establish processes to monitor analyse and understand the impact of the operations on the surrounding environment and communities, direct and develop the site environmental and social performance team and ensure ongoing community support for the operation.
- Champion the implementation of MMG’s Sustainability Framework having a strong focus on identified environmental material topics; Nature, Responsible water consumption, tailings and waste management and energy and climate change action
- Delivering environmental and social performance inputs for the Life of Asset planning process including environmental protection notice constraints, expected land access/approvals/permitting timeframes and stakeholder commitments.
- Developing & standardising management plans, procedures etc to manage environmental and social concerns along with managing the Environmental and Climate Change risk registers
- Monitor environmental and social performance related industry best practice, innovation, stakeholder expectations and regulatory trends; and communicate to internal stakeholders. Incorporate into site practices where appropriate.
- Directly manage a small team of internal specialists and external consultants and to deliver environmental and cultural heritage compliance monitoring, inspection and reporting programs. Ensuring field teams operate in a safe & healthy manner.
- Weekly, monthly and annual reporting including the delivery of annual EPN, NGERS, NPI and Sustainability reporting, ensuring data accuracy and quality.
- Lead environmental incident response, investigation, corrective/preventative actions and reporting.
- Proactively engage with external stakeholders to build sustainable long-term relationships and maintain social licence to operate. This includes engagement with communities, businesses, interest groups, & other government & nongovernment organisations & their staff. Maintain a community stakeholder list.
- Represent MMG in external environmental and community related forums such as TMEC and others as determined appropriate.

About You
To be successful, you will have an unwavering commitment to safe work practices, and MUST be able to pass a pre-employment medical and drug & alcohol screen, along with the following:
- Bachelor Degree qualified Environmental Engineer, Environmental Scientist or Geoscientist.
- Post graduate qualifications in Community Relations or Social Impact Assessment a differential (desirable)
- 7+ years of mining industry experience within a similar leadership role
- Demonstrated experience in operational environmental management, stakeholder consultation and social performance.
- Experienced in surface water, groundwater, air and noise quality monitoring, data management/interpretation and reporting.
- Leading and/or participating in SHEC related audits and inspections and participating in incident investigations (ICAM)
- Track record of successfully leading regulatory compliance and stakeholder engagement programs
- Strong communication skills written and oral with a focus on report writing, management plan development and implementation.
- Drive to take personal ownership of initiatives, remove obstacles and negotiate buy-in; and to achieve results in difficult circumstances with a personal sense of urgency.
- Excellent working knowledge of environmental and social management frameworks, and of the technical (Geochemical, Geotechnical, Hydrological, Environmental) and socio-economic interdependencies.
- Working knowledge of study management, including key processes such as design criteria, options assessments, risk assessments and project controls.
- Knowledge of outcome focused stakeholder engagement and negotiation processes
- A proven history with safe work practises, with the ability to identify and address unsafe practices.
- Valid Drivers Licence
