About the Role

The Principal Business Improvement role contributes to our Asset Management and Operational Excellent team and is a key business support unit that works closely and collaboratively with our global assets.  The role purpose: 

  • Collaborate across MMG to develop continuous improvement programs to deliver SSHE/Volume/Cost/Value outcomes.
  • Provide specialist support to identify, review and implement business critical initiatives and/or optimisation in systems and processes, to drive sustainable improvements and create value across our operational, support, and service functions.
  • Establish metrics for the function to determine process performance and to drive improvement.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Support Assets in establishing business improvement processes to deliver sustainable improvement in SSHE/Volume/Cost.
  • Working globally to identify, engage and manage a range of stakeholders to support the evaluation and implementation of continuous improvement activities and initiatives.
  • Provide thought leadership and advice in relation to business improvement, building organisational capability through tools, methodologies, and frameworks to enable benchmark performance.
  • Providing coaching, advice and mentorship to individuals and teams on approaches to improvement and transformation.
  • Review and implementation of frameworks to support initiatives (i.e. Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen)
  • Respectfully challenging conventional management and operational practices to enable business improvement by influencing in a varied way, tailoring approach to suit the audience.
  • Working with senior managers to break the cycle of short-term solutions, embedding a business improvement culture.
  • Collaborate broadly, working with other functions to implement baseline ways of working.
  • Instil a creative problem-solving approach, facilitating regular workshops, bringing Lean methodologies and creativity together, along with operational excellence and continuous improvement resources.
  • Apply effective control and governance by identifying risks and effective management and tracking of projects.
  • Develop and implement communication and change strategy per business improvement initiative.
  • Provide oversight for a pipeline of business improvement activities across the organisation.

  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, collaboration, coaching and facilitation skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, with ability to converse in the language of the mining operations and explain complex technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • Ability to win trust and cooperation among colleagues and business stakeholders.
  • Ability to influence and lead without direct line authority.
  • Ability to understand broader business vision and identify optimal opportunities for business improvement to advance operations.
  • Ability to assess business improvement initiatives through considered and quantified assessment of factors such as value and ease.

 

Knowledge

  • Mining and processing operations
  • Understanding of the interdependencies between various functions of a Mining Operation from both a technical and operational perspective
  • Understanding of Inputs, Throughputs and Outputs of a Mining Operation including Theory of Constraints
  • Understanding of Consulting Methods
  • Understanding of Project Management Methods
  • Understanding of Mining Best Practice Methods
  • Understanding of Framework(s) that support Operational Excellence (ie TQM, Six Sigma, Lean)
  • Understanding of the practical application of Business Improvement to deliver real, transformational results.
  • A strong commercial understanding of the end-to-end mining value chain

 

Experience

  • The minimum of 8 years’ experience in industries with Lean based operating systems (e.g. automotive, manufacturing, health, finance, supply chain logistics)
  • Experience in engaging subject matter experts and technical and operational mining teams.
  • A blend of business acumen and large-scale, global improvement.
  • Experience in Executive engagement is highly preferred.
  • Experience in Vendor evaluation and engagement is highly preferred.
  • Mining industry exposure ideally.

 

Education, Qualifications, Tickets, Licences

  • Appropriate tertiary qualification e.g. Engineering, Business, Technology.
  • Continuous improvement e.g. Six Sigma.
