MMG Limited is a global base metals business listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.  We are well placed for growth and play a critical global role in the transition to a sustainable future.  We have operations in Australia, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo and Peru, and support offices in Australia, South Africa, China and Laos.  Our people are as diverse as our assets, and the work is varied.

MMG is expanding our hub in Johannesburg to provide support to our exploration, operational and project activities at our Kinsevere and Khoemacau mining operations.  We are pleased to advise that as part of this expansion, we seek a Principal Mining Engineer (Underground) to focus on our Khoemacau (KCM) operation and expansion projects.

Located within our Support and Life of Asset Planning Group, the purpose of this role is to:

  • Lead the development, optimisation and technical assurance of the underground LOM plan, including strategic mine designs, production schedules and alternative scenarios.
  • Lead the mining component of the strategic planning and IBP processes, aligning the LOM plan with business objectives, processing requirements and financial assumptions, and ensuring material constraints, risks and value drivers are considered.
  • Prepare, review and endorse underground Ore Reserve estimates and supporting documentation in line with the JORC Code, acting as Competent Person where formally appointed.
  • Integrate geological, geotechnical, metallurgical, infrastructure, processing, cost and operational inputs into the LOM plan, identifying material risks, opportunities and study gaps.
  • Lead value-optimisation and strategic trade-off studies, covering phase strategy, mining rates, scheduling, cut-off strategy, material routing, stockpiling, processing allocation and capital timing.
  • Lead and review strategic mine planning studies and technical-economic evaluations (concept, pre-feasibility and feasibility), including cost, cash-flow and sensitivity analysis, with recommendations for site decision-making.
  • Work directly with site planning and operational teams, including field verification, to validate assumptions, resolve planning issues and communicate outcomes, risks and recommendations to site leadership and governance forums.

This is an exciting opportunity to work across an expanding underground operation and work closely with site teams to add value, reduce risk and achieve operational efficiencies.  To be considered, we ideally seek:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or a related technical discipline
  • Membership of, or eligibility for, a recognised professional body (e.g. AusIMM, AIG or equivalent)
  • Eligibility and relevant experience to act as Competent Person for underground Ore Reserves under the JORC Code
  • Extensive mining industry experience, including significant experience in strategic underground mine planning and Life of Mine development
  • Experience in Open pit mine planning an added advantage
  • Demonstrated experience preparing, reviewing and assuring underground Ore Reserve estimates and JORC-compliant documentation
  • Experience leading and reviewing technical and economic studies, including pre-feasibility, feasibility and value-optimisation work
  • Experience leading or contributing significantly to strategic planning and IBP processes
  • Advanced knowledge of underground strategic planning, including optimisation, scheduling, cut-off strategy and material routing
  • Strong understanding of mine economics (NSR, NPV, capital and operating costs, cash-flow and sensitivity analysis) and how geological, geotechnical, metallurgical and operational factors affect the LOM plan
  • Advanced proficiency in mine design and scheduling software and in Excel and data analysis

This is an exciting opportunity to work a flagship operation in the Central African Copperbelt and partner with peers in Resource Geology, Mine Geology, Closure, Metallurgy.

We invite you to explore this opportunity and grow with MMG.  We mine to build wealth through the development of our people, the investments we make in local communities and the value we deliver to our shareholders.  We recognise and respect the unique value and perspectives each person contributes to our safety, production and operational excellence outcomes.
