EXCAVATOR OPERATOR - METAL PICKER
BASIC FUNCTION OF THE POSITION:
The Excavator Operator- Metal Picker will be responsible for safely and efficiently operate an excavator on the Run-of-Mine (ROM) Pad for the detection, segregation, removal, and management of tramp metal and other hazardous contaminants from ore feed streams. The incumbent shall ensure continuous feed quality, protect downstream crushing and conveying equipment.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Your key accountabilities include:
- Operating excavators and associated equipment safely and efficiently within designated ROM Pad operating areas.
- Inspecting ROM material and identifying tramp metal, steel objects, wire rope, drill steel, bucket teeth, chains, scrap metal and other foreign materials that may damage crushers, conveyors, feeders, or processing equipment.
- Removing and segregating identified metal and waste material according to site procedures.
- Assisting with stockpile management, cleanup activities and housekeeping on the ROM Pad.
- Monitoring operating conditions and reporting abnormalities affecting production, safety, or equipment performance.
- Ensuring work is conducted in accordance with approved operating procedures, risk assessments, and task hazard analyses.
- Complying with all requirements of the Botswana Mines, Quarries, Works and Machinery Act and all applicable Regulations relating to machinery operation, workplace safety, reporting of hazards, and employee responsibilities.
- Performing documented pre-start inspections and equipment safety checks before operating machinery.
- Reporting unsafe conditions, defects, incidents, near misses, and hazardous situations to supervisors.
- Conducting pre-operational and post-operational inspections.
- Recording and reporting equipment defects accurately through established maintenance reporting systems.
- Monitoring machine gauges, warning systems and operating parameters
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, COMPETENCIES AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR EFFECTIVE PERFORMANCE:
- BGCSE
- Valid Excavator Operator Competency Certificate.
- Minimum of 2 years' experience operating hydraulic excavators in mining, quarrying, or heavy industrial environments.
- Experience working on ROM Pads, crusher feed areas, stockpile management, or metal picking operations will be advantageous.
- Experience operating in proximity to crushers, conveyors and heavy mobile equipment.
